Ms. Denee Bowen is a graduate of Stephen Decatur High School who is now in her 21st year of service at Pocomoke Middle School. The first 17 years were spent as a Special Education teacher. The last four have been in the role of School Counselor. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Special Education from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore and a masters in School Counseling from Wilmington University.
“Becoming a special education teacher was a natural choice for me, inspired by a family member with special needs. Witnessing his journey sparked a profound sense of empathy and a desire to contribute positively to the lives of others facing similar challenges. My advice to students would be: Don’t just wish for it, work for it. Education is not just about grades; it’s a journey of self-discovery & growth. Take advantage of every opportunity, put in the work, be resilient in the face of challenges and remember the skills you develop and lessons you learn are valuable.”

A group of 9th graders had the opportunity to visit Barnes and Noble today to explore the wonders held inside a bookstore. Thanks to the Hertrich’s Cash for Class grant, each student was able to purchase several novels to take home with them. Thank you Hertrich Family for supporting our students and staff! @Hertrichfamily

As an English teacher, Mr. Cartwright has shared his educational journey in the form of poem.
Mr. Carlton Cartwright – “Where I’m From”
I am from Sussex County, Delaware
Cape Henlopen Class of 1993
Go, Vikings!
I am from Salisbury State University to Wilmington University
B.S. in Elementary Education
M.Ed. in School Counseling
I am from Pocomoke Middle to Snow Hill Middle to Pocomoke High
English Language Arts teacher to middle school counselor
High school counselor to community school liaison
I am from Carlton and Charlotta
Two of many giants upon whose shoulders I stand
Because of them I can
“help somebody, as I travel along,
cheer somebody with a word or song,
show somebody he’s traveling wrong.”
Because of them, “my living shall not be in vain.”

Ms. Kelli Cropper is a Reading Intervention Teacher at Pocomoke Elementary School. She began her teaching career in the Baltimore City Public School System before returning home to her roots. She is in now her 28th year of teaching, 25 of those years were spent as a first-grade teacher in Worcester County. Ms. Cropper is a graduate of Pocomoke High School and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from Morgan State University. She pursued a master's degree in School Counseling at Wilmington University and is now completing a master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction at The University of Phoenix.
“I was inspired to become an educator after being taught, nurtured, and loved by AMAZING teachers that looked like me while attending elementary, middle and high schools in the Pocomoke area. Just to name a few - Mrs. Lena Tilghman, Mrs. Annie Custis, Mrs. Peggy Stewart, Mrs. Patricia Miller, Mrs. Esther Robbins and Ms. Madonna P. Johnson encouraged and motivated all students to excel. There is so much joy in educating today's youth and seeing them learn and grow daily!
My advice - When you have a dream, don't let anything or anyone deter you! Work hard and anything is possible!!”

Ms. Zena Tunnell is a Special Education Teacher at Stephen Decatur High School. She has been teaching for 15 years. She graduated from Salisbury University with a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and Middle School Math, Grades 6-8. She received a master's degree in Special Education from Wilmington University and, additionally, has earned 30+ credits in master level reading courses.
“I always knew I wanted to be a teacher. I originally wanted to be a middle school math teacher, but during my student teaching, Maureen Capelli, a special education teacher, observed me in the classroom, and told me I had a special gift because not everyone has the patience to work with struggling learners. I took the special education praxis and that same year I was offered a position at Stephen Decatur High School. My advice to students would be to set goals for what you want and be ready to take the necessary steps to get yourself there!”

🌟 Join us in celebrating Mr. Arenella's innovative teaching methods in AP Statistics! 🎉 He ingeniously utilized Skittles and M&Ms to explore sample proportions with his students. 📊🍬 What a fantastic way to make statistics come alive in the classroom! 😄

Ms. Maya Batson is a graduate of Pocomoke High School who is now serving in her 5th year as a Pre-Kindergarten teacher at Pocomoke Elementary School. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education and Master of Education in School Leadership.
”My family is my inspiration for becoming an educator. As a third-generation educator, I have spent the majority of my life looking up to those I love the most. Their ambition to encourage and pour into the next generation led me to be the educator I am today. My advice to you would be, nothing positive comes from comfort zones. Chase every opportunity to improve yourself, connect with those who share common goals, and speak your truth, even if your voice shakes.”
